Self-evaluation
A lot of people worry they won't be able to learn tango. They think it is an impossible and unachievable goal. But it is natural for things at the beginning not to work out quite the way you'd like. Your teacher's task is to give you new steps to learn, steps that maybe you won't be able to do quite right away. If you learn too quickly it's not a reason to be satisfied. On the contrary, your teacher didn't estimate your abilities correctly. You should be happy if you can't do perfectly what the teacher asked. That means you found the weak link in your abilities and an opportunity to learn something new.
Don't compare your skills today with some idealistic future state. You'll always find something you still can't do. It's much more useful to compare what you can do today with what you could do yesterday. Each lesson must become a small step in your learning. Evaluate yourself by what you managed to learn in the last week, month, year. There is no ideal. There is just a never ending path to an unachievable ideal. And it's important to walk this path rather than reach the end of it. Our teaching is comprised so that every step of this path is enjoyable.
All of the dancers, including the most famous ones, started at the beginning where they had to practise, practise and practise. Not even the most acclaimed dancers know and can do everything. But they became masters just because they walked and are still walking that path of learning. If they managed it, you can too. Remember that learning tango is not about the technical demands as much as it's about relaxing, trust, communication and mostly joy.
I know for sure we can teach you tango, whatever you think about your capabilities. It is useful to simply say to yourself: 'I can't do it' and open yourself to the new and unknown. The worst thing is to hide behind your fears or previous experiences. If your practise is not to plan? Be happy and practise. Tango will get to you!
